The Canon Speedlite EL-5 (Version 2) builds on the original EL-5 with greater off-camera wireless reach while retaining its established flash features and performance. Its potential range from a transmitter or sender flash extends to 164 feet (nearly 50m), a 67% increase over the original model's 98 ft. range. Integration with Canon's Wireless E-TTL system lets it work with previous Canon radio-based wireless flashes and transmitters.
Power comes from Canon's LP-EL rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. It delivers up to 350 full-power flashes per charge, with more available at reduced output. The high-speed charging system recycles in 1.2 seconds at full power or approximately 0.1 seconds at minimum power in Normal flash mode, helping the flash keep pace with active subjects. The source also describes shorter recycling times than a Speedlite 600EX II-RT used with the CP-E4N battery pack.
Manual output spans 1/1 to 1/1024th power, providing flexibility for both strong illumination and a subtle amount of fill to soften facial shadows. The minimum output extends three stops below the Speedlite 600EX-II RT's 1/128th-power setting. This adjustment range supports changing conditions, from dark scenes requiring substantial flash output to subjects that need only a small lighting correction.
- • Automatic or manual head zoom matches coverage for 24mm to 200mm or longer lenses on full-frame cameras, equivalent to 15mm–125mm+ lenses on APS-C cameras.
• A 14mm wide panel extends coverage for lenses wider than 24mm.
• At the 35mm zoom setting, the stated effective flash distance reaches 42 feet at f/2.8 and ISO 100, increasing to approximately 84 feet at ISO 400.
The Multi-function Shoe uses a digital connector to expand communication between the flash and compatible Canon EOS cameras. Supported functions include direct access to flash menus, customizable buttons, and Custom Flash modes. Gold-plated terminals improve the connection, and the flash checks its installation status before communication begins. Compatible camera examples include the EOS R3, R7, R10, and R6 Mark II.
Custom Flash modes C1, C2, and C3 make it possible to recall registered settings instead of rebuilding a lighting setup each time conditions change. You can switch between E-TTL automatic flash and manual flash, including saved individual values. On compatible cameras, the flash's custom modes can link to the camera's C1, C2, and C3 shooting modes, allowing camera mode changes to recall the corresponding flash settings. This is useful when ambient light changes or when shifting from lighting an entire scene to concentrating on a face.
For hands-on operation, the EL-5 Version 2 uses the same joystick, Select dial, and LCD panel as the Speedlite EL-1. The display makes settings and remaining battery availability easy to check while shooting. On compatible EOS R-series cameras, assigning the Speedlite menu direct button through Customize Buttons lets the joystick bring up Flash function settings or Quick flash group control on the camera's LCD, keeping adjustments accessible without relying solely on the flash display.
A built-in continuous LED modeling lamp previews light coverage and shadows before taking a photograph. Choose from five brightness levels and operate it with a dedicated button or two presses of the shutter. In a multi-flash arrangement, a sender EL-5 Version 2 can also turn the modeling lamps of off-camera EL-5 Version 2 receiver units on or off, making it easier to check the combined lighting setup.
Canon's Camera Connect smartphone app provides remote adjustment of wireless flash settings, shutter release, and image review. After positioning the flash units, you can adjust their intensity and inspect the results on the phone without touching the camera or flashes. This is particularly useful for multi-flash work, hard-to-reach placements, or shoots with limited assistance. The free app's supported controls include flash intensity, flash compensation, sync settings, multi-flash control, and FEB.
- • EOS R-series integration supports assigning flash functions to the control ring, accessing quick flash group control, and setting up multi-flash shooting.
• Full-output continuous firing is specified at approximately 95 flashes or more, without requiring a fan.
Dust- and moisture-resistant construction is described as equivalent to the EOS R5. A rubber seal surrounds the shoe locking mechanism, while seals at the exterior cover joints help prevent dust and moisture from entering the flash body during difficult shooting conditions.
The LP-EL battery is charged with Canon's LC-E6 charger, the same charger used for LP-E6-type batteries in many EOS cameras. The LC-E6 charger is not included.
