The Sigma 16-300mm F3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary is an all-in-one APS-C mirrorless zoom with an 18.8x zoom ratio. Its wide-angle-to-super-telephoto range provides a 24-450mm equivalent field of view in 35mm format, covering subjects from landscapes and interiors to sports, wildlife and aviation without changing lenses.
Close-up capability extends across the zoom range. Maximum magnification reaches 1:2 at 70mm for detailed photographs of flowers, insects and other small subjects, with 1:3 magnification available at the wide end and 1:4 at the telephoto end.
The design prioritizes portability through its mechanical and optical construction, including a high-refractive-index glass element with substantial thickness variation and an aspherical element. The Nikon Z version measures 73.8mm x 125.4mm / 2.9in. x 4.9in. and weighs 630g / 22.2oz. Lens length is measured from the front of the lens to its mount.
Sigma's High-response Linear Actuator (HLA) drives the focusing elements directly, without gears or other intervening mechanical parts, for quiet, precise autofocus. Its fast, smooth focusing helps capture moving subjects such as birds and aircraft.
The Nikon Z version uses a control algorithm specifically optimized for autofocus speed and camera communication. It supports AF-C continuous autofocus and in-camera aberration correction on compatible cameras.
Optical stabilization uses Sigma's OS2 algorithm to reduce camera shake during handheld shooting, including in low light and at full zoom. Stabilization is rated at 6 stops at the wide end and 4.5 stops at the telephoto end, measured on an APS-C camera at 16mm and 300mm according to CIPA standards.
- - Internal focusing moves elements within the lens without changing the barrel's length.
- A wide-end zoom lock fixes the zoom ring to prevent the barrel from extending under its own weight during transport.
The optical layout contains 20 elements in 14 groups, including one FLD, four SLD and four aspherical elements. These specialized elements help correct aberrations and maintain sharpness throughout the zoom and focusing ranges.
Flare and ghosting are addressed through light-incidence testing, optical simulation and Sigma's Super Multi-Layer Coating. The coating reduces reflections within the lens and between the lens surfaces and a digital camera's image sensor, helping preserve image contrast in difficult lighting.
Focus breathing is suppressed throughout the zoom range to limit changes in angle of view as focus shifts. This helps maintain consistent framing for video and multi-shot photography techniques such as focus stacking.
Dust- and splash-resistant construction includes sealing at the mount connection, manual focus ring, zoom ring and cover connection. A water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element helps keep contaminants from adhering and makes cleaning easier. The lens is not waterproof: avoid exposure to large amounts of water, which can cause severe internal damage.
On supported cameras, lens aberration correction can compensate for peripheral illumination, chromatic aberration and distortion. Available corrections and automatic operation vary by camera model. Where correction settings use ON/OFF options, Sigma recommends setting all aberration correction functions to ON (AUTO).
- - A precision brass bayonet mount uses treated surfaces and reinforced construction for durability.
- The nine-blade rounded diaphragm helps produce rounded out-of-focus highlights near maximum aperture.
The lens is made in Aizu, Japan, and each unit is tested with Sigma's proprietary MTF measuring system. Sigma also lists Mount Conversion Service availability for this lens.
The lens received the 2025 TIPA World Award for Best APS-C Travel Lens.
