The Sigma 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS Contemporary is a compact telephoto zoom for APS-C cameras, offering a constant F2.8 aperture and an approximately 75-180mm equivalent range in 35mm terms. The Sony E-mount version measures just 99mm long and weighs 390g, combining a portable design with the lens’s large-aperture telephoto capabilities.
Its 18-element, 13-group optical design incorporates one FLD element, three SLD elements, and four aspherical elements. This combination supports compact dimensions while correcting optical aberrations from the center of the image to the edges throughout the zoom range, helping maintain high contrast.
Telephoto rendering gives the lens a range of creative uses, from portraits and outdoor events to product photography. At its approximately 180mm-equivalent long end, pronounced background blur and perspective compression can help a portrait subject stand out or produce a flatter-looking product composition with restrained perspective.
- - Fast, quiet autofocus: Sigma’s HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) linear motor moves the focusing lens directly, without gears or other intervening mechanical parts. This direct-drive system provides high-speed, high-precision autofocus with quiet operation.
For video, the optical design limits focus breathing—the change in angle of view that can occur when focus changes. Reducing this shift helps preserve the composition during focusing and supports more natural-looking footage.
- - Optical stabilization: The OS2 algorithm provides 6.5 stops of stabilization at the wide end and 4.5 stops at the telephoto end. These ratings follow CIPA guidelines and were measured at 50mm and 120mm using an APS-C mirrorless camera.
The control layout is deliberately minimal. Sigma omits switches such as the focus-mode selector and OS switch to keep the lens interface straightforward and intuitive while retaining its autofocus and stabilization functions.
Dust- and splash-resistant construction includes sealing at the mount connection, manual-focus ring, zoom ring, and cover connection. The lens can be used in light rain, but it is not waterproof: keep substantial splashes away from it, particularly near water. Water entering the lens can cause serious damage that may be impractical to repair.
A water- and oil-repellent coating protects the frontmost lens surface. Water wipes away more easily, and the coating resists oils and fats sticking to the surface, making lens-surface maintenance easier in demanding shooting conditions.
Within Sigma’s Contemporary lineup, this lens complements the 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN and 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN. Together, the three lenses form a constant-F2.8 zoom system spanning ultra-wide-angle through telephoto. Sigma lists their combined weight as approximately 2 pounds (935g), providing broad focal-length coverage in a portable three-lens system.
- - Sigma’s Mount Conversion Service is available for this lens.
- Every lens is tested using Sigma’s proprietary MTF measurement system.
