Designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras, the Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 A brings wide-angle through mid-telephoto coverage to an everyday standard zoom. On Sony E cameras, its range is equivalent to 24-75mm on full frame. The 16mm end accommodates landscapes, architecture, and family groups in confined indoor spaces, while the longer end provides framing options for casual snapshots and portraits. A constant F2.8 maximum aperture is available throughout the zoom range.
The Sony E version measures 3.2″ (79.6mm) long, weighs 10.8oz (305g), and accepts Ø55mm filters, keeping the lens easy to carry for travel and outdoor photography. Its compact construction combines an optical design using special lens elements with refined mechanical engineering. Selected barrel materials, including metal, and the internal design provide structural rigidity. TAMRON also lists engineering plastics technology, using polycarbonate for high-precision components that need to withstand demanding use.
The fast F2.8 aperture pairs sharp subject rendering with soft background blur, giving you a way to separate subjects from their surroundings. Indoors or at dusk, it also allows faster shutter speeds to help reduce motion blur when photographing active children or other moving subjects. If your camera offers a lens-correction setting such as Lens Compensation, TAMRON recommends leaving it set to ON or AUTO.
A VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor provides fast, precise autofocus and subject tracking for spontaneous moments, including the unpredictable movement of children and pets. Its quiet operation suits both still photography and video in sound-sensitive settings. Depending on the recording environment, however, lens operating sounds may still be captured in video.
For travel vlogs and everyday video, the 16mm wide end lets you include the surrounding scene in self-recorded shots. The lens is designed to balance comfortably on a gimbal or shooting grip, while quiet autofocus supports recording. The Sony E version also works with TAMRON Lens Utility, allowing you to assign functions for videography.
Close focusing expands the lens's usefulness for flowers, cafe scenes, and intimate portraits. Minimum object distance is 0.15m (6″) at the wide end and 0.29m (11.5″) at the telephoto end, with maximum magnification ratios of 1:4.5 and 1:4.8, respectively. You can work close to a subject while retaining a broad background at wide angle, or use the mid-telephoto end for softer background separation.
TAMRON's Toned Profile Next exterior updates its earlier sculpted design with a more mechanical appearance. The styling combines a streamlined look with the practical, rugged character intended for regular photographic use.
The front cap has strap holes on both sides so it can be secured to a camera strap or camera body with a commercially available cord. Keeping the cap tethered helps reduce accidental drops or loss and avoids repeatedly finding somewhere to store it between shots. - Do not lift or carry the lens by the strap while the front cap is attached. - A strap may not fit if its thickness or tip shape is unsuitable for the holes.
- - Seven-blade circular diaphragm: maintains a nearly circular opening through two stops down from maximum aperture, helping background highlights appear with smooth edges. - Glass-molded aspherical elements: help control distortion and improve sharpness toward the image edges. - Low-dispersion glass: helps compensate for chromatic aberration.
Second-generation BBAR-G2 coating improves ghosting and flare suppression compared with TAMRON's original BBAR coating. It helps preserve fine detail and contrast when photographing backlit subjects.
- - Moisture-resistant construction uses leak-resistant seals throughout the barrel to help protect the lens outdoors. The USB Type-C connector port is waterproofed. - A water- and oil-repellent fluorine coating protects the front lens surface, makes it easier to wipe clean, and reduces its vulnerability to dirt, dust, moisture, and fingerprints.
