The Tamron 20-40mm F2.8 Di III VXD for Nikon Z is a compact zoom for full-frame mirrorless cameras, covering ultra-wide-angle through normal perspectives with a constant F2.8 maximum aperture. Its portable design suits travel, street photography, everyday shooting, and extended handheld use. The Nikon version measures 88.7mm/3.5" long.
At 20mm, the lens emphasizes depth and scale while taking in expansive landscapes. Zooming toward 40mm provides a more natural perspective for everyday photographs and portraits. On an APS-C mirrorless camera, the range is equivalent to 30-60mm on full frame, offering another useful range without changing lenses.
For video and vlogging, the compact body balances well on camera grips, rigs, cages, and compact gimbals. The 20mm setting makes it possible to include more of the background while keeping the camera at a comfortable distance for self-recording.
The VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor provides fast, precise autofocus, with smooth subject tracking from the minimum focusing distance to infinity. Its quiet operation is useful for both still photography and video in sound-sensitive settings, although operating sounds may still be recorded depending on the environment.
The optical design uses 12 elements in 11 groups, including four LD (Low Dispersion) elements and two GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) elements. BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) coating reduces ghosting and flare to maintain detail and contrast, including when shooting backlit subjects.
The F2.8 aperture supports soft background blur. A nine-blade diaphragm keeps the aperture opening nearly circular through two stops down from maximum aperture, helping background highlights retain smooth edges.
Close focusing at the 20mm end reaches 0.17m (6.7") with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.8. This lets you emphasize a nearby subject while keeping its surroundings in the composition for wide-angle close-ups with pronounced depth. At the telephoto end, minimum object distance is 0.29m (11.4") and maximum magnification is 1:5.1.
TAMRON Lens Utility supports customization for still photography and video using a computer or Android device. You can adjust focus-ring settings, while the mobile version offers Focus Preset and A-B Focus that can be operated remotely without touching the lens. The lens is also compatible with TAMRON-LINK.
- • Computer connections use the separately sold TAMRON CC-150 USB Type-A to Type-C cable or CC-350 USB Type-C to Type-C cable.
• Smartphone connections use the separately sold CC-350 cable.
• Firmware updates require a computer and TAMRON Lens Utility for PC; the mobile version does not support firmware updates.
- • A 65° zoom-ring rotation allows quick focal-length changes with little hand movement.
• The glossy black exterior has improved abrasion resistance to help reduce scratches and fingerprints.
• Updated zoom- and focus-ring materials and deeper grooves improve grip, while the curved, glossy brand ring finishes the exterior design.
The 67mm filter size is shared with many other Tamron mirrorless lenses, allowing compatible polarizing and neutral-density filters to move between lenses and simplifying the use of matching lens caps in a multi-lens kit.
- • Moisture-resistant construction uses seals throughout the barrel to help protect the lens during outdoor shooting. The USB Type-C connector port is waterproofed.
• A water- and oil-repellent fluorine coating protects the front element, makes it easier to wipe clean, and reduces its vulnerability to dirt, dust, moisture, and fingerprints.
For Nikon Z cameras, supported functions include Hybrid AF, Eye AF, M/A mode, and in-camera correction for shading, chromatic aberration, and distortion. Availability depends on the camera, so consult its manual. Tamron advises enabling lens correction with the camera's ON or AUTO setting and using the latest firmware; its compatibility information is dated August 2026.
